Did you see the film of that ? Can't remember the name. IMDB doesn't seem to have
anything either. Maybe a docu-drama for TV ? It seemed quite realistic.

Nope - not that one. It was purely about the rescue attempt. Interesting scenes ( CGI
presumably ) of helicopters is zero vis due to sand storms for example.

OK. Got me. Though I note you cite nothing recent.

Israel just seized a Hamas official. I guess that will be the trade.

Personally I was hoping for a flattening ;-)

If Hamas kills the young soldier I reckon I will get my wish.

The Google news sites say the Palestinians are annoyed that little
noise is made about the Palestinian prisoners held by the Israelis.

Thing is, I don't believe Israel is known for beheading their
prisoners.

Michael

Israel is currently holding about 6000 Palestinian prisoners that it
previously agreed to release some time ago, as part of the peace plan.
The Norwegian news made this point right from the start.

As you say, Israel is not known for beheading their prisoners - but it
*is* known for holding large numbers of Palestinians for long terms
without good reason. The fact that they have previously been happy to
exchange thousands of prisoners for a small handful of soldiers shows
that the great majority of these prisoners are not dangerous terrorists
or even serious criminals. The only real difference between the Israeli
methods and the Palestinian methods is that the Israelis wear uniforms,
are better armed, and are supported by the USA (at least the
administration, I don't know about the American people).

Presidents don't need brains; they can delegate all the heavy thinking
to smarter people, which W does. Presidents need principles, which W
has. By contrast, Clinton was super-smart, surrounded himself with
dull wimps, and had no principles.

He didn't "do" anything with the economy but ignore it and let the
Internet bubble grow without control and then bust. Charisma is no
substitute for economic policy. W is proving Laffer's point, that in
modern times, lower tax rates produce higher tax revenue. Clinton
played golf with the Enron boys, and W is putting them in jail.

Slick Willie had several opportunities to get OBL, after the first
bombing of the WTC and the Cole attack. He declined for whatever
political reasons, and Sandy Berger got caught stealing the relevant
memos from the National Archives. So OBL got the WTC on his second
try, and we got a couple of wars. Clinton did manage to bomb an
aspirin factory in North Africa (using anti-thong munitions), and
wrangle a Nobel "Peace" Prize for Arafat. And his only influence his
administration had on global warning was hot air.

Quote:

No, absolutely incorrect.

a) Despite moaning and wailing to the contrary, the present economy
is blazing, has been blazing, and needs *slowing down*[1], which is why
the Federal Reserve Board's Open Market Committee has been raising
interest rates at every single meeting since June 30, 2004[2].

b) The boom during Clinton's tenure was a bubble, not sustainable, and
none of his doing. (He simply happened to be in office when Al Gore
invented the internet.) Likewise, its collapse was none of his fault.
It simply was. He reaped the benefit on his watch, then bailed when
the tab came due, just as did Enron, Global Crossing, etc.

c) What exactly is it that you think Clinton did to generate the
bonanza? I find no miracle policy, no innovative measures, indeed,
nothing.

d) Beyond the internet boom, credit for prosperity of that era goes
*gridlock*, the watchword of the day; Clinton's success was chiefly
from his being prevented doing much of anything at all.

"The government which governs least, governs best." --Thomas
Jefferson (attributed)

He also didn't start any wars.

1. Bosnia. Not strictly a war, just a place where our guys get shot.
Clinton promised we'd be out in a year. When are those troops coming
home?

2. Kosovo.

But mostly he stuck to ousting the government of Haiti, and
nation-building in Somalia.
