Let's quantify that a little. Imagine a graph. X-axis is "how close
you are to me", with the origin being "self", followed by "wife" or
"kids" (I'm not sure of that order), siblings, cousins, distant
cousins, villagers, countrymen, people who share your language, and so
on. Y axis is, positive direction, how much you like them, and
negative Y is how much you hate them, all the way down to "murder on
sight."

Now consider possible shapes. I submit that large, peaceful, orderly
countries have a lot of citizens with a soft, wide exponential decay
sort of curve. Chaotic societies will have a lot of people whose
curves swing negative pretty close in. One interesting, probably
common, curve swings negative for small X then turns back up; as they
said about al-Zarqawi, "oh, he hates Americans, but nothing like how
he hates the Shiites."

One could actually interview people in various countries and plot the
graphs. And then make some political decisions.

Palestine is *officially* a democracy... by VOTE they dominate the
government. Do you deny that?

I'll yield on the Palestine/Hamas point. I really wanted to know about
"The people of Lebanon *support* the Hezbollah cretins". I thought
Hezbollah was controlled/funded by Syria and Iran, or perhaps I am
listening to White House talking points too much.

The Lebanese government does not control Lebanon, Hezbollah does.
Thus there are no Lebanese, only Hezbollians ;-)

...Jim Thompson

True;if the Lebanese people TRULY wanted Hezbollah gone, they could snipe at
them, refuse to supply food for them, rat them out to authorities(or
Israel;tell where they are hiding,their supply dumps,bunkers,etc.).

In actual practice,Hezbollah IS the south Lebanon government.
So,warfare upon them is legitimate.

Now you're thinking like a terrorist!

Religion generally of all colours is responsible for a great many 'bad things'.
The nicest bunch I've ever come across are the Hindus actually.

And the radical islamists are bombing them, too. One of the true
motivations here is sex: the radicals are anti-woman, anti-porn,
anti-fashion, and generally messed up about the boy-girl thing.
Western culture is a serious threat to that sort of prudery, and the
Hindus have a rich history of eroticism.

The Hindus and Moslems have something of a *history* as I'm sure you well know.

I actually don't know much about the breakup of India. As long as the
Brits were in charge, the muslims and hindus seemed to get along, but
it exploded at independence time. More to read up on, I guess.

You've got to admit, the British Empire might have tidied up a bit
more before going into retirement.

I'd actually go slightly further - or maybe simply more to the point. The Hindus
know how to have fun. Many Moslems seem to have a problem with even such a concept.

Like, um, some members of this newsgroup? Not to name names, of
course.

Anybody know if the Hindus ritually mutilate their children, like the
Moslems and Jews?

(and some white people, but not mine, Thank Goddess!)

Thanks,
Rich

Interesting stuff.

I sense an element of denial in Jim's attitude wrt this subject. The other side of his
response is the 'clan' thing where what would otherwise be deeemd unacceptable behaviour
can be excused where a rival clan is involved.
